Compost is a balanced soil food.  But it is a concentrate and should be used in a mix with topsoil, sand or other materials at a (typically recommended) ratio of no more than 30 percent compost. 

McGill: spreading compostMcGill supplies bulk compost products to the agricultural, horticultural, and landscaping and turf industries.  Compost is also used in land reclamation and erosion control.

McGill also manufactures a compost product used as a biofuel.

Compost offers many benefits --

  • Replenishes depleted soil organisms to improve nutrient uptake and help plants fight pests and diseases
  • Balances pH
  • Holds moisture
  • Adds macro and micronutrients
  • Helps control sediment run-off and erosion
